Meet the Athlete: Ben McIntyre

This month’s ‘Meet the Athlete’ introduces Ben McIntyre (U23), who shares his journey with Harriers, his favourite events, and the valuable lessons he’s gained throughout his athletics career.
What’s your Harriers Journey ?
After Joining Harriers in 2009 after a series of Primary school races I started out with Dave Parsons in Fundamentals before moving to foundation on a Wednesday with John Dill & Sue Brewer before joining Kevin Buttles group in 2015. Kevin continued to provide training advice and guidance even whilst I was away at University .
Favourite Events ?
That well known combination of 400m hurdles and marathons !
What do you feel the club has given you ?
It’s given me the chance to make great friends who share the same passion for our sport. The support I have at the club through teammates and coaches motivates me to keep pushing myself to improve.
Next Summer I take on the role of Senior Men’s SAL Team Manager where I will be working to do my best in the role.
What advice would you give to your U11 self ?
Keep enjoying the sport and make sure you focus on building friendships . Athletics is not just about improving your times, jumps or throws, it’s more about being part of a team . The friendships I made, especially at U15/17 I still have today as recent Marathon trips to Barcelona and Rome testify .
