FUNdamentals Academy (Under 11)

The FUNdamentals Academy introduces young athletes (School Years 3-5) to athletics in a fun and supportive environment. Focussing on building foundational skills and encouraging enjoyment & participation.

Training Overview

We meet every Thursday at the County Ground athletics complex, with sessions from 6:00pm – 6:45pm or 6:50pm – 8:00pm. Children will practice various events, including throwing, conditioning, middle-distance running, sprint-relay, and long jump. Some weeks, a competition session will be held in preparation for upcoming events.

Session Details:

  • First session free
  • Sessions are led by UK Athletics-qualified coaches and assistants, along with parent volunteers.
  • For more details please use the contact us form.

With high demand for places for this Section of the club, we prioritise the immediate children of:

  • Existing club volunteers
  • Military families (warrant card to be shown at the child’s first training session)
  • Medical need (reference would need to be shown from a medical practitioner)
  • Child’s parent is an active member of a local running club.

We also prioritise instances where the parent/guardian is willing to offer their services as a regular volunteer during Thursday night training.  Once the child starts training with us, the volunteer is on a three-month probationary period.  Should the volunteer decide not to continue to serve during this period, the child would revert back to their previous place on the waiting list.

If you believe your child qualifies under one of these conditions, please reference this in the comments section of your application.

Competition Participation:

We encourage all athletes to take part in competitions such as Quad Kids and the Sportshall League. Participation helps build confidence and allows athletes to practice their newly acquired skills. Track your child’s progress with the U11 Performance Card, updated after key competitions and training assessments.

How to Join

We operate a waiting list, so please do not turn up without submitting the form first. We will not add children onto the waiting list if the child is in Reception or Year 1. For more details please use the Contact Us form.
