Training Sessions Overview
We aim to offer coaching for all events, but as an amateur organisation this is always limited by the number of coaches and helpers that are available. Here's a list of our main training sessions:
- Road Running
- Beginners Road Running
- General Road Running
- Track & Field
- Seniors & Older Juniors Track Sessions
- Juniors (age 12 - 16)
- Children (age 7 - 11)
- Other Training
- Circuit Training
Training Locations
We regularly use the following facilities for our training sessions:
Other locations may be used by individual coaches for their groups (for instance, Howard Moscrop's group train at the Lawns on some Saturdays) - you should be informed of all relevant training sessions by your coach.
Beginners Road Running
Tuesday, 7pm at the Haydon Centre
This session is suitable for complete beginners – i.e. those that have never run before. If you are thinking about getting fit, perhaps for a charity fun-run or just to feel better about yourself, then this is the group for you.
For more information, contact Micheal Affleck on 01793 725193 or Claire Tubb 01793 488771.
General Road Running
These sessions are suitable for older juniors and adults confident in running at least 4 miles. We make sure that newcomers have someone to run with - you won't be left on your own! All Road Running sessions are free! Contact Val Gibbons for more information about these training sessions.
Monday evening at the Broome Manor Golf Club, meeting at 7.00pm for a 7.15 start. There are usually 3 routes to choose from, with distances from about 3 miles to about 8.
Friday evening at the Haydon Centre, meeting at 6.00pm. Usually one route (different each week) of about 4-5 miles. A smaller group than Monday's but always someone to run with.
Sunday Morning at Broome Manor Golf Club, meeting at 10.00am. Broome Manor Joggers is an informal running group meeting for long steady runs from 7 miles upwards. Many of the group have used these runs for Marathon long training runs. Contact Jason Barry on 01666 824648 for more information.
Track & Field
Our base for Track & Field is the track at the County Ground. The club hires the track from Swindon Council. To cover the cost of this, we charge track fees of £2.50 per session for members and £3.50 for non-members. If you use the track regularly it may benefit you to take out a Season Ticket (available to members only). These cost £50 for a six month period and are available from our coaches or from the Membership Secretary, Alan Pope.
Seniors & Older Juniors Track Sessions
On a Tuesday at 6:30pm, the following groups meet:
- Neil England's Long / Middle Distance Group
- Howard Moscrop's Sprints / Hurdles / Middle Distance Group
- Tony Jackson's Jumps / Throws / Sprints Group
The track is open on a Tuesday for individuals to train (if they are club members), but please speak to one of the coaches at the track to let them know if you plan to do your own session
Juniors (age 12 - 16) Training
Older juniors train at the track on Tuesdays Wednesdays, and Thursdays. There are groups being coached for most athletic events and all juniors are welcome - enthusiasm is the only requirement. If you are a junior and interested in joining us, you should come along to the track on a Wednesday evening at 6.15 to introduce yourself and try a training session. Once you have settled in with a training group then you may become involved with training on a Tuesday or Thursday at the track, or at a different time and location as advised by your coach.
Children's Training (age 7 - 11)
Wednesday, 6.15 for a 6.30 start, at the County Ground.
There is no formal competition for children of this age, but this training group is very popular and many of the children stay with us and go on to compete in the Under-13 age category.
We take on children age 7 and upwards. There is no charge for the first session, and budding athletes don't have to join straight away. The session lasts for an hour and they usually do more than one event per session - the group is often split into 2 or 3 and these groups might do throwing first, then the long jump, with a run at the end (just an example).
If you are interested in bringing your child to try training with us, please contact Nicola Wallace..
Circuit Training
Suitable for all ages, abilities and all events. Circuit training is a very effective cross training exercise that improves strength and conditioning. Highly recommended for all athletes.
Monday 7:45 - 8:45 at the Ridgeway Leisure Centre, (winter only). Session led by Howard Moscrop.
Thursday, 7pm - 8pm at the Haydon Centre.
